It all began with love at first sight. An old typewriter found by chance, and the urge to bring it back to life. Then a second, then a third… And from there MaTypo was born, carried by a passion that has never gone out.
Every machine we came across told its own story — a story made of words, of gestures and of beauty. We soon understood that these objects were far more than simple tools: they are witnesses to the past, genuine treasures that bring soul and character to modern interiors.

How do you select your typewriters?
Every typewriter that joins our collection is chosen against strict criteria: overall mechanical condition, rarity of the model, aesthetic elegance and restoration potential. We comb flea markets, private sales and personal collections across France to find the finest pieces. We systematically turn down any machine that is too far gone or beyond repair.
What does your restoration process involve?
Our process is carried out entirely by hand, step by step: careful dismantling, deep cleaning of every part, lubrication of the mechanisms, adjustment of the typebar alignment, fitting of a new ribbon, and rigorous testing of every key. A machine takes several days to restore, sometimes several weeks for the complex models. We guarantee that on arrival your machine is ready to write.
Which makes of machine do you offer?
We work on the greatest historic names: Hermes, Remington, Brother, Olivetti, Olympia, Underwood and many more. Each make has its own mechanical character and its own charm. Our online shop features models from every era, from the middle of the twentieth century to the last mechanical machines made before computers arrived.
Do your machines really work?
Absolutely, 100%. Every machine sold by MaTypo is tested page after page before it is sent. Every key works, the ribbon is new, the carriage return is smooth, the alignment is perfect. You can write the moment it is out of the box. We also supply the original instruction manual where one is available, and otherwise a digital version matched to the model.
Why typewriters?
Out of a passion for mechanical craftsmanship and slow writing. In a world dominated by the screen and the soulless keyboard, typing on a typewriter is a focused act, almost meditative. Every word counts. Every page written has a physical presence. We believe these objects are not obsolete: they are another form of writing — more deliberate, more beautiful. And we want to save them so they carry on telling stories.
